Calgary has no shortage of great places to eat, but Borgo Trattoria is a hands-down favorite. Borgo is known for it’s astonishing atmosphere, but in addition to that it was awarded 1st place by Avenue Magazine for  Best Desserts in the city  and was voted 2nd Best Italian Restaurant in 2013. Opened two years ago by the owners of the old Capo, Borgo has been successful from the start. Did we mention that they serve one of the best Italian cappuccinos in town? If you are coffee addicts like we are, you will understand how difficult it is to find the perfect Italian style cappuccino outside of Italy!

Although the food is utterly fantastic, we have to say that the atmosphere is what really excites us about this place. When you first walk in you are greeted with a smile and are drawn immediately to the giant screen projection of old black and white Italian films and/or fashion shows. The restaurant itself gives you an open, very well-decorated loft sensation and is plastered with modern rustic hardware and photography of Italian landscapes, using dim lighting to give you a subtle romantic feel. A perfectand beautiful balance.

When it comes to the food and wine, the selection is both affordable and of high quality. You are able to purchase a bottle of imported wine in the $50 range and pairs greatly with almost an dish you choose on the menu. The flavourful dishes are made to share and are affordable enough for two to over consume within the $100 range.

Melanzane – Eggplant ‘fries’, fennel seed-lemon yoghurt dip ($9)

Main:

Rigatoni – Wild boar Bolognese ($19)
Beef Sirloin – Char-grilled, lemon- arugula salad & truffle ‘patatine’ ($20)

Dessert:

EVERYTHING – they are all great, that is why they won the award!
