The Calgary Opera has a great season lined up and “An Italian Girl in Algiers” is first to launch. It’s opening date is this Saturday November 15th, but a few of us were lucky to sit in on their dress rehearsal tonight to get a peak at what the show is all about and we loved it!
A classic by Rossini, this play depicts the power of a seductive woman and the determination of one in love. The sassy Isabella in search of her lost love Lindoro unexpectedly crashes her plane in Algeria where the powerful Mustafa discovers her and makes her the object of his affections. She soon uses this to her advantage when she discovers Lindoro has been held as a slave by the very same man. It was very entertaining to see the playful Isabella play mind games on the poor beastly Mustafa, but to see it in Opera form is something amazing indeed.
