Everyone seems to be talking about how the world has become a darker place, especially with recent wars, mass shootings and targeted terrorist attacks. Last week I found myself binge watching on Aleppo coverage videos and crying myself to sleep on the same night. It was truly heartbreaking to watch and yet I couldn’t pull myself away. Maybe it’s because in some weird way I was in shock about the things I was seeing.
There are so many places and people in this world that need our help. Someone told me that 2017 will be the year that the positive forces in the world start to unite together to combat the darkness. Those positive people are influencers, actors, motivational speakers and people that society looks up to. They said in times of hardship, more people will turn to their idols for positivity, motivation and ways that they can support. In fact, just the other day I watched YouTube video on someone cutting up a $5000 Chanel bag and read thousands of comments with people outraged because “with so much darkness in the world, that money could have gone to a much better place”.
There are so many places in the world that can use our help and its easier than you think to support a good cause. For example, The Obakki Foundation’s Scarves For Water campaign is committed to bringing fresh water wells to 1500-2000 people in Africa every time 500 of their scarves are sold. To date they have drilled over 13 wells and have helped over 25000 people get fresh water for their basic needs.
In North America, we wear scarves for style but in Africa some where scarves as a cultural symbol and a symbol for hope. I’m wearing mine today for that hope.
