Each year, over a million pounds in clothing goes to waste. They fill our landfills and go unused. We have all heard about global warming, but what you might not know is that one of the main causes of greenhouse gas are the same landfills that our clothes get dumped into. For example, when waste is put in landfill, it is generally compacted down and covered. There’s then no oxygen that can enter the fill and eventually the waste releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
One way to help reduce this and start taking care of Mother Earth is by taking the time to recycle your clothes. In celebration of Earth Day, I’ve partnered with H&M to help them build awareness on their Garment Collecting initiative by recycling some of the clothes that I no longer wear. If you haven’t heard of the initiative yet, you aren’t alone but it’s something you should know! The H&M Garment Collection initiative makes it easy for you to recycle all of your unwanted clothes. You can bring ANY article of clothing, no matter the condition (even your undergarments) to ANY H&M location, during ANY day of the week and they will make sure that every article of clothing gets recycled and made into something new!
It’s a simple, small step that we can all take to help work towards a better earth. I challenge you to collect all of the clothes that you no longer wear and bring them to your nearest H&M store. Trust me, you’ll feel good about it when you do!
