Grunge meets couture. Street style with a gothic flare. These are just some of the best ways to describe NRT Fashions. Founded in 2009 by Nicole Rita Tomney, NRT is a high end women’s and men’s wear line that mixes the facets of wearable art and everyday style to create a unique brand that catches your attention both on and off the runway.
Tomney creates and brings a unique trend to the fashion world and especially to Calgary where she began her career. “My biggest challenge thus far in the fashion industry has been making sure that I stick to my style and not letting peoples opinions tamper with my creative ideas no matter how dark or twisted they may be. Fashion is art and creativity and I push to be a leader creating trends not following them.”
Since starting NRT, Tomney has had the opportunity to be represented in the Calgary Fashion Industry by many different outlets including magazines, news papers, fashion shows, music videos, and boutiques. She has kept very busy over the past few years showing her collections not only in the Calgary Fashion scene but other city’s including Vancouver, Toronto, and Mexico. Specializing in couture, NRT is not afraid to create one of a kind shocking pieces. Did we mention that all NRT Collections are hand made by Nicole Rita Tomney herself?
“My Biggest fashion icons would have to be Alexander McQueen and Marilyn Manson,” said Tomney. “McQueen one of the most brilliant beautiful designers to have ever graced the runways. And Marilyn Manson is the king of shock rock and dark disturbing things. Both of their creations have taught me that dark things are beautiful and to always stick to what I love and and am passionate about even if it may not be what everyone else likes. The meanings behind their work is unbelievable to me. Anything can be taken as inspiration but it takes so much to turn it into art.”
Although she is an inspiration herself, she states that “being able to create a piece of art that people can wear from a vision in my mind is really what inspired me to become a designer. Being able to construct something from my mind is one of the greatest things in the world in my opinion. And everyday I get to see what my hands can create. My Mission for NRT was to have people wearing and loving my clothing, to create bad ass clothes for people un afraid to stand out and dress how they feel not how they are told! I feel I’ve keep pretty on point to that mission thus far!”
