The Benefits of Yoga

Oh yoga, how I love thee. This week I wanted to share a bit about the health benefits of yoga and why I think it’s a fitness life saver.

I have been practicing yoga on and off for the last 4 years and I cannot get away from it. Why? Because the benefit I get from it is too much for me to let it go. As an avid soccer player who spends most of her spare on the field, I know a thing or two about muscle pain and injury. I’ve noticed that as each year passes, I need more recovery time for my body and I have a harder time playing repeatedly throughout the week without feeling like my legs might fall off. However, when I was practicing yoga regularly (3 times per week) and playing soccer I managed to stay injury free for the entire year. These yoga sessions allowed me to get in my stretches that most would typically skip. This allowed me to keep my muscles healthy and flexible. Yoga is also good for your mental health. Most instructors will teach you to focus on your breathing while in each pose and these breathing exercises help calm the mind, slow your heart rate and relieve stress. Huffington Post states that “when there is tension in the body and mind, your intuition gets buried and your body switches to survival mode. Your yoga practice makes space in your body physically, releases tension, and calms your mind, making room for your intuition to float to the surface and guide you.” I love this fact because it holds true for me and inspires me to keep practicing.

Improved flexibility is the most obvious benefit of yoga, but it is also known to strengthen your bones, increase muscle strength, burn calories and improve digestion. Also, if you choose to practice hot yoga, you tend to release more toxins through your pores giving you an additional cleanse with each session.
