Last week, I had the pleasure of staying at the Gran Caribe in Cancun. Now I know there are plenty of resorts to consider in Mexico, but there are a few MAJOR reasons you should consider staying at this resort instead of some others when travelling to Cancun.
Location is always key when selecting a resort. How far are you from the airport? How close are local excursions? Will it cost you a million dollars to get from point A to B?
One of the main reasons the Gran Caribe is so appealing is it’s stunning beachfront location. It’s less than 30 minutes from the airport, it is steps away from the luxury shopping zone and is in the heart of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. The resort is shaped in a U to try to ensure most rooms have an ocean view, from Junior to Grande. Obviously, the better the room quality, the better the view, but it’s nice that they try to give as much of a view as they can to as many guests as they can.
One of the most important things I consider when travelling is what type of amenities are included. Like I mentioned earlier, there are plenty of all-inclusive resorts to choose from in Mexico, but what makes one resort better than another is the quality of the amenities you are offered. The Gran Caribe offers you numerous a la carte dining options (Il Pescatore was my favorite), in-suite dining services from 7 am -11pm daily, in-suite mini-bars and liquor dispensers, waiter services along the pool and beach areas, daily fitness classes, and access to the SPAreal where you can receive a relaxing massage or hydrotherapy options!
They also offer an amazing nightly performance in the lobby that is completely complimentary!
3. The Food
As mentioned, the resort holds a number of a la carte restaurants that all guests have access to with reservations. There are five restaurants to be exact, each specializing in different cuisines.
- Albatros – doubles as an elegant al la carte and a casual buffet and specializes in international casual cuisines with an ocean view.
- Gaviotas – which is beach front buffet and a relaxing bar offering Caribbean and Mexican specialties throughout the day.
- Maria’s – the resorts authentic Mexican restaurant capturing local flavours and atmosphere. You can find the best Margaritas here!
- Il Pescatore – specializes in Italian cuisine, particularly seafood! They also offer you traditional pastas, meat and vegetarian options. There is even a private room that you can reserve at no extra charge if you’re interested in having a romantic one-on-one dinner!
- Sunset Grill – this is a classic American and European option that is perfect for the whole family. They even offer feature shows for the kids three times a week to help keep them entertained while you dine!
4. The Beach
Now, this may seem like a silly thing to consider since most Cancun resorts are along the beach. However, it’s actually REALLY important to understand how each hotel maintains their beach and what they do to contribute to the environment. The Gran Caribe (and all Playa Resorts) are very concerned about the maintenance of their beaches. They have staff on hand to help clean the beaches throughout the day not only for the guests, but for the local wildlife as well.
They also offer you a variety of luxurious options to choose from when setting up along the beach. Whether you’re in for a cabana, a lounge chair, or just a clean stretch of sand. They give you all of these choices and do their best to ensure the quality is above and beyond what you would expect of an all-inclusive resort. To me, that says something.
5. The Rooms
My room at the Gran Caribe was clean, modern and equipped with adjustable air-conditioning! HOORAY! I love adjustable air conditioning because I am one of those strange people that get really cold at night naturally (even though I may feel like an oven to my boyfriend). I find this one of the most important things I look for when travelling. The room also had a beautiful terrace that overlooked the ocean and its windows were the perfect for watching the sun rise in the morning! I couldn’t have been more comfortable and relaxed during my stay.
6. The Staff
Again, this may not be something that most people would consider when travelling, but I think it’s vital to have great staff around you to have a comfortable stay. Think about it, you want to feel comfortable with everyone around you right? Something I love about Playa Resorts is that they pride themselves on hiring staff with personality and not always because of skill. It’s easy to teach someone how to do something, but not easy to teach someone how to be a better person. They want each of their employees to have passion in their job and do everything they do from the heart and they want their employees to feel just as valued. These methods are embraced from all levels at the resort, from executive all the way down to the wait staff. Each person treats each other with respect and that warmth is obvious from the minute you get into the resort. It’s also part of what makes you feel comfortable when you stay somewhere.
Cancun will always be one of my favorite places to travel. Not only because it’s so close and convenient, but because of the experiences I have at the resorts I stay at and the people who work there. Sending a big thank you to Playa Resorts and the Gran Caribe for being so welcoming and so pleasant to stay with. I hope to be back soon!
